About the travel grants

CESS is delighted to announce the availability of travel grants to attend CESS 2018 at the University of Pittsburgh.

The travel grants are designed to support scholars from the Eurasia region to participate in global scholarly networks to continue making important contributions to the CESS scholarly community.

Funding for these grants is provided by CESS and the Open Society Foundations.

The fixed amount grants of US$1,500 are intended to support travel-related expenses (economy airfare, ground transportation, economy lodging, visa costs). Applicants themselves and/or their home institutions must cover any additional expenses.

Grants will be paid in cash at the end of the conference on production of 1) supporting documentation showing that the grantholder has incurred costs related to travelling to and presenting at the conference and 2) a digital copy of the paper presented at the conference.

Selection and eligibility criteria

  • Presentation proposal has been accepted for the CESS 2018 Annual Conference in Pittsburgh;
  • Applicant comes from the Central Eurasia region (Central Asia, the Caucasus, Iran, Afghanistan, Tibet, Mongolia, Siberia, Inner Asia, the Black Sea region, the Volga region, and East and Central Europe);
  • A record or strong promise of fostering public discussions in the scholar's home context;
  • A record or strong promise of advancing institution-building in the scholar's home context by promoting quality academic scholarship;
  • Strong promise for a productive scholarly career;
  • High quality scholarship in the English language;
  • Financial need.

Priority will be given to 1) early career scholars and 2) applicants who have not previously received a travel grant from CESS.
